Please pick one of these literacy options that best suits your child's ability and/or interest:

Create a sign for your zoo animal.  Be creative and make sure you use many colours.  Remember our "Wow pictures".

Create an animal description page for your animal.  Information you must have is its name, where its natural habitat is, what it eats and 3 fun facts about your animal.

Number Talk

We are going on a pretend field trip and it is going to cost money.  We are going to focus on Canadian Coins.  How much do you think it would cost each of us to go to the zoo?  Go on the Toronto Zoo website and check out how much it would cost a person to travel to the zoo.  Find out how much it would cost for your family to go.

Please watch these music videos to learn to identify the coins based on their attributes.

Identify Coins

Now that you have done that, you will realize what a deal our virtual trip will be at the cost of $1.00!  For our math this week, we will be focusing on Canadian coins.  Find a collection of coins for our loose parts math.  What can you do with these coins?  Could you count them?  Could you sort them by colour?  Could you sort them by size?  Maybe you want to put them under a piece of paper and make a rubbings using a crayon?

Please pick one of these numeracy options that best suits your child's ability and/or interest:

Count how many coins you have in your collection and sort them by colour and size.

Sort your coins out based on their value.  Count the pennies by 1.  Count the Count the nickels by 5.  Count the dimes by 10.

BONUS.  What coins could you use to pay to go on our trip that add up to 100 cents or $1.00?

Belonging and Contributing

Zoo keepers work together as a team to keep the animals healthy and happy.  Pick a healthy snack or meal that you could make with your family.  Try to write a list of healthy foods or send me pictures of you helping prepare the meal.  If you do not feel comfortable with your child helping in the kitchen, they could go through a flyer and cut out healthy food options or help write a grocery list.

Play a game of "Go Fish" with your family.  All you need is a deck of cards or you can make your own number cards at home.  Each player gets 7 cards and the rest go in a pile in the centre of the table.  Take turns asking people if they have a certain number, if they have it you can continue to ask, if they don't have it, they will respond "Go Fish" as which time you take one from the pile in the centre.  The game continues until all the cards are gone.  Count how many pairs you made.

Paint a picture of a zoo animal.

Problem Solving and Innovating

Create an enclosure that would best meet the needs of your zoo stuffy or toy.  You could use a box, lego, blocks, paper towel tubes, plastic containers or whatever else you think would suit your design.  Take pictures and or a video to help explain your design and the construction process.
