Literacy and Math Behaviours

Using PebbleGo, research a creature that you might find in a pond.  Find and write or tell 5 interesting facts that you learned about this creature.

Grab a stick and head to your sandbox for messy math today.  Ask an adult to call out the names of 2D shapes.  Use your stick to draw them in the sand.  Draw as many as you can.  Remember to take a picture and send it to Mrs. Bennett-Jervis.

Belonging and Contributing

With an adult in your family, follow the recipe to make playdough.  This playdough can be used as a manipulative in your "Frogs and Flies" math activity or enjoyed outside creating bugs at your picnic table.

Play Dough

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup salt
  • 4 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 2 cups lukewarm water
  • 2 Tablespoons of vegetable oil (coconut oil works too)
  • Food coloring, optional
  • Quart sized bags
Stir together the flour, salt and cream of tartar in a large pot. Next add the water and oil. If you’re only making one color, add in the the color now as well. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly. Continue stirring until the dough has thickened and begins to form into a ball. Remove from heat and then place inside a gallon sized bag or onto wax paper. Allow to cool slightly and then knead until smooth. If you’re adding colors after, divide the dough into balls (for how many colors you want) and then add the dough into the quart sized bags. Start with about 5 drops of color and add more to brighten it. Knead the dough, while inside the bag so it doesn’t stain your hands. Once it’s all mixed together you’re ready to PLAY.
Store the play dough inside the bags once done to keep soft. Keeps for up to 3 months.
Grab a dice and head outside to get your body moving.
If you roll a 1 crawl like a turtle one length of your house.
If you roll a 2 fly like a butterfly two lengths of your drive way.
If you roll a 3 crawl like a lady across your lawn.
If you roll a 4 slither like a snake in the grass.
If you roll a 5 move like a snail cleaning the pond.
If you roll a 6 jump like a frog six times.

Roll at least 10 times.  If you want a real challenge, add up your score.

Mystery Creature

If you find a creature while playing outside or exploring, please make a video with three clues.  Be sure to reveal your creature at the end of the video.  Send it to Mrs. Bennett-Jervis so I can share it on the blog.

Self-Regulation and Well-Being

Make a healthy snack and enjoy it outdoors.

What would you see and hear around a pond or natural body of water?  If possible, ask your parents to take you for a walk in a conservation area.

Problem Solving and Innovating

Build a teepee or put up a tent and read your favourite book inside.

Make a thumb print art page similar to this and write the names of each of our friends in our class under the bugs.
